In the 2019/20 academic year, the Hanse-Kolleg took part in the City of Lippstadt’s ‘Climate School’ project for the first time. Students, teachers, the Student Council and the caretaker implemented various measures to promote climate and environmental protection and energy saving.

For this commitment, the school received the ‘Climate School Bronze’ award and a prize of 600 euros!

• In the 2021/2022 academic year, the Hanse-Kolleg even achieved the ‘Silver’ award.
• In the 2025/2026 academic year, the Hanse-Kolleg is taking part in the project once again.

In the years when the school did not participate in the project, there was nevertheless an environmental group that implemented its own environmental measures and will continue to do so in the future!
 

An overview of some of the measures implemented in recent years:

- Appointment of energy managers in each class

- Carrying out an energy audit in all classrooms (measuring room temperature, lighting levels and water flow rates at the washbasins)

- Replacement of taps with excessively high water flow rates with more economical models

- Monthly measurement of the Hanse-Kolleg’s consumption figures for gas, water, electricity and pellets

- Organisation of a ‘Warm Jumper Week’ in winter, during which the central heating flow temperature was reduced to save energy

- Phasing out paper cups for hot drinks in the cafeteria in favour of reusable organic cups

- Replacing the hot drinks vending machine with a machine featuring a ‘cup stop’ button to encourage the use of personal reusable cups

- Installing paper waste bins in classrooms to separate general waste from paper

- Creation of a bee-friendly perennial bed at the rear entrance of the Hanse-Kolleg

- Construction and installation of a bee hotel next to the perennial bed

- Organisation of a car boot sale to sell second-hand clothing, books and other items

- Production and installation of a deposit bin in the entrance foyer for collecting returnable bottles and cans. The proceeds from the deposits will be donated to the Lippstadt animal shelter.

- Clean-up campaigns around the school building, particularly to collect cigarette ends

- Exploring environmental issues during project weeks
